The College of Staten Island softball squad enjoyed a fantastic week last week, posting a 5-1 record, and sophomore pair Christina Tufano and Jacqueline Cautela were cited for their big weeks by taking home a pair of CUNYAC weekly honors. Tufano took home Player of the Week honors, while Cautela was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.
In six starts at third base, Tufano proved why she is the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Year. The sophomore batted a scorching .636 this week, going 14-22 from the plate with a whopping 15 RBI and six runs scored, posting four extra-base hits including her first homer of the season (vs. Farmingdale State). Tufano added a trio of stolen bases as CSI earned sweeps over SUNY-Old Westbury and Montclair State. She has taken over the team lead with a .431 batting average and leads the team with 22 hits.
Cautela has had a dominating start to 2015 and it was evidenced by her 4-0 week in the circle for the Dolphins last week. Cautela posted a 2.00 ERA earning a win each against Old Westbury and Farmingdale, while posting two wins against MSU. In 21 innings of work, Cautela allowed 13 hits while fanning 12. For extra measure, CSI’s leadoff hitter batted .455 at the dish.
CSI is next in action on Thursday, traveling to William Paterson University for a 3pm doubleheader.
