Another week, another Hero of the Week honor for the College of Staten Island women’s softball squad, as this time, the Dolphins’ Jacqueline Cautela took home Defensive Hero of the Week honors thanks to online voting at HeroSports.com.  Cautela joins fellow pitching sensation Nicolette Trapani as CSI’s only winners of the honor in any sport.  Trapani won the same distinction a week ago.

Formerly BennettRank.com, Hero Sports is a ranking agency that ranks all teams in all sports across all NCAA Divisions, as well as awards citations on a weekly and yearly basis.  Trapani was up against four other national defensive stars and was the top vote-getter by a landslide, gaining 81% of the vote and 1,173 votes overall out of 1,448.

Cautela was a sound recipient.  CSI was short on games played thanks to Mother Nature, but in her lone outing against Brooklyn College, Cautela tossed a perfect game, facing a minimum 15 batters in 22-0 win.  Cautela added 13 strikeouts, a career high, and good for 4th highest in CSI single game history.  For the season, Cautela is 7-4 with a 1.83 ERA, leading the squad in innings pitched (65) and strikeouts (61).

CSI is currently 14-8 this season and will resume play on Thursday evening, when they host the College of Mount St. Vincent for a 5pm, non-conference, doubleheader.
