The College of Staten Island women’s tennis bid for a CUNYAC three-peat ended prematurely last year, and the team is anxiously awaiting a chance at redemption in 2016, and has started it off with the announcement of its schedule today. The College will face 15 opponents in 2016, leading to the CUNYAC Championship Tournament, where it has reached the Finals three out of the last four seasons.
Play opens on September 3 at the CSI Tennis Center, as the Dolphins will welcome in UMass – Boston for the first time in program history, at 1pm. The next day, CSI will face off against Yeshiva University in its opening weekend before travelling to face John Jay College on September 9 in its CUNYAC opener. After another road test, the Dolphins will play three straight home matches, including conference tests against York College and a showdown with Brooklyn College on September 22.
Two home contests bookend three road dates in October, including a return to the refurbished National Tennis Center on Tuesday, October 11 against Hunter College, in a rematch of last year’s thrilling CUNYAC Semifinal that saw the Hawks prevail, 5-4. A non-conference contest against William Paterson University concludes the regular season on October 19.
The CUNYAC Championship Tournament features seven teams with the regular season champion earning a first-round bye on October 23. Semifinal play on October 25 and the Final on October 28 will also be played at the National Tennis Center, with the conference champion earning a berth into the NCAA National Championship in May of 2017.
The Dolphins are expected to play an abbreviated spring season as well. A schedule for the spring of 2017 is expected to be released in February.
