GAME VIDEO – The College of Staten Island took to the pitch this afternoon against FDU-Florham for the first time in six years.  The Dolphins have never beaten the Devils, a streak that continued this afternoon.  CSI held a 1-0 lead for a majority of the second half until the Devils scored two quick goals to defeat the Dolphins 2-1.  The Dolphins suffer their first loss at home this season and fall to 6-3-1 overall while the win brings FDU up to 5-5-3 on the year.

The College of Staten Island opened today’s game against FDU-Florham with an early shot by Krista Anson.  Goalie Annie George was able to come up with a nice save to prevent her team from falling behind 1-0 just one minute into the game.  The Devils would storm down the field and earn a corner kick which they nearly converted into an early goal.  Brittni Calleo crossed the ball in and found a wide open Danielle Matos who laced one to the open part of the goal but standing there was a Dolphins defender who was able to knock it away.

13 minutes into the game Krystina Rodriguez ripped a shot near post which forced George to make the save.  The Devils picked up their play as CSI started to give the ball away in bad areas which led to open shots forcing Nicole Mignone to make saves.

The biggest opportunity for either team came in the 29th minute of the game when Brianna DiStefano took out a streaking FDU striker inside the box for a penalty kick. The Devils’ leading scorer Calleo stepped up to the spot and sent it high over the bar to keep the game knotted 0-0. Catherine Mulligan who has started every game for the Dolphins thus far this season, came off the bench in the 39th minute to help stop the Devils’ attack.

The Dolphins had their best chance of the game up to this point when Krystina Rodriguez received a pass Victoria Sanchez which put Rodriguez through on goal however, Rodriguez would hit the ball wide.

The first goal of the game came in the 63rd minute of the game when Lauren Smith headed the ball through the defensive line to a wide open Jennifer Cosenza.  Cosenza was able to square up and chip the ball over George for her seventh goal of the season and first of the game. CSI has been solid at home this year going a perfect 4-0 without allowing a single goal. That all came crashing down in the 77th minute when Gabby Diaco headed one home off of a corner kick from Brittni Calleo.

The Dolphins seemed to fall apart after that first goal as just three minutes later in the 80th minute Calleo would crush a shot from 30 yards out and put it over Mignone’s head for the second goal of the game.

CSI would be unable to recover from two late goals by the Devils.  They would pick up the pressure and try and find an opening but the Devils tightened up and didn’t allow anything through. On a last ditch effort Cosenza would curl a shot far post which would beat George however it would bounce off of the post to keep the Dolphins down 2-1.

The Dolphins would finish the game with 12 shots and seven corner kicks to 15 shots for FDU and four corners. George would be forced to make six saves while Mignone also had to make six saves of her own.

CSI will return to action on Saturday, October 8 in a CUNYAC matchup against Medgar Evers College at 2:00 pm at the CSI Soccer Complex.
