The College of Staten Island enjoyed another solid week on the field of play last week, and three Dolphins took home awards by the City University of New York Athletic Conference. All of the award winners were repeat winners as women’s soccer duo Catherine Mulligan and Krystina Rodriguez won Defender and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, while freshman tennis star Tristiana Adragna won Rookie of the Week honors as well.
Adragna has been a force in recent weeks for the Dolphins. CSI only had a single match last week, a big win over Hunter College in their CUNYAC finale, but Adragna was at the heart of the win with victories in singles and doubles. The win in singles was her fifth in a row and it came by way of a convincing 6-0, 6-4, decision over Catherine Ng in the No. 2 position. In No. 2 Doubles, Adragna was also successful with partner Viktoriya Volkova, as they defeated Ng and Mehriniso Khaydarova, 8-4.
Adding a win yesterday, Adragna is now 9-3 in singles play this season and is a combined 6-6 in doubles play with five different partners.
On the soccer pitch the Dolphins went 2-0 a week ago with a pair of shutout wins. Sophomore Catherine Mulligan has been a shut-down force in the back, earning her third CUNYAC Defender of the Week honor for an outstanding pair of games last week that did not see CSI surrender a single shot on goal. That certainly made life easier for CSI keeper Nicole Mignone, who registered a pair of shutout wins. The Dolphins have now not allowed a goal in four straight games spanning 380 minutes.
Offensively, freshman Krystina Rodriguez repeated her honor, having net a pair of goals with three assists on the busy week. She scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over St. Joseph’s (LI) in tremendous fashion approaching the 60th minute in that game, then chipped in a goal with three helpers in a 9-0 rout of York College. Rodriguez is second on the team with six goals and leads the way with 11 assists and 75 total shots.
Both CSI units are back in action tomorrow. The women’s tennis squad hosts William Paterson at 3:30pm at the CSI Tennis Center, while the women’s soccer team travels to face Brooklyn College at 6:30pm.
