GAME VIDEO – The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team saw their modest two-game win streak snapped, falling to unbeaten New York University by an 84-69 count today at the Sports & Recreation Center.  CSI, which also saw its seven-game home winning streak snapped, fell to 2-2 on the early season, while the Violets improved to an unblemished 5-0.

NYU never trailed in the contest, opening up a 9-0 lead thanks to three three-pointers, two by Kaitlyn Read.  The Violets then turned on the heat on the inside, powering for inside drives that resulted in points leading to a lop-sided 31-16 lead at the end of a single quarter of play, finalized by an Amy Harioka three as well.

A layup by Christina Pasaturo and a pair of free-throws by Samantha Flecker got CSI back to within 11, 31-20, to open the second, but the Violets responded by unleashing a 16-5 run that resulted in their biggest lead, 47-25, with 2:44 remaining until half.  Shaye McGoey net three baskets in the run, including two three’s to make the Violets comfortable.

The rest of the game was an exercise in CSI trying to get back into the contest.  CSI could only get to within 17 in the third quarter, the final time at 5:05 on an Angelique Price lay-up, but each time NYU had a response, and the Violets took a 65-46 lead into the final quarter.

CSI had time for one final gasp at a run and they found it during the first half of the fourth quarter.  The Dolphins powered to an 11-3 run to open the quarter, powered by three straight Flecker jumpers, the first a three-pointer.  CSI then hit a rough patch, turning the ball over twice and missing three consecutive shots and NYU converted on the other end each time to seemingly put the game away, skating to the 84-69 final.

NYU shot a red-hot 54.8% from the field (34-62), holding the Dolphins to just 39.3% (24-61).  The Violets also out-rebounded CSI, 42-26.  Read led all scorers with 22 points for NYU, adding 9 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Harioka finished with 16 points while Kayla Patterson added 14 and seven boards.  Flecker led the Dolphins with 16 points, adding six rebounds.  Victoria Crea finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Pasaturo finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds and five assists.

The win for NYU was their 21st in a row against the Dolphins and they improved to 10-0 all-time in games played at CSI.

The Dolphins will return to action on Tuesday, opening up conference play against John Jay College at 5:30pmpm, part of a CSI basketball doubleheader.
