The College of Staten Island men’s and women’s swimming programs ended their 2016-17 seasons with Day Three of the ECAC Open held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, competing in five events overall. The CSI men would place in the final scoring, coming in 18th overall with 36 points. Below is a breakdown of morning and afternoon heats.
– The Men’s 200-yard Backstroke opened up the day for CSI and in the preliminary heat in the morning, Nick Defonte came in at 1:58.25, a good two seconds faster than his seed time, landing him 25th overall in the field.
– Up next was the Women’s 100-yard Freestyle. In the vast morning field, Ewa Wojciechowska came in with a time of 55.66, good for 40th overall.
– In the Men’s 100-yard Freestyle, Timothy Sweeney again shined like he did on Friday and Saturday. This time, in morning prelims, Sweeney raced in at 46.36, good enough for a tie of 18th place.
– Next up was the Men’s 400-yard Freestyle Relay. In the morning heat, CSI qualified for the evening final as the team of Sweeney, Defonte, Jonathan Gorinshteyn and Derek Villa came in 16th place with a time of 3:16.16. In the evening final, the team moved up two places into 14th place overall with a time of 3:14.78. In the final heat, senior Sweeney turned in a time of 45.88 in his opening split, a new CSI and CUNYAC record, a fitting end to his fantastic career.
The ECAC Open marked the end of a great season for the Dolphins, one that saw the men’s team with their fourth-straight CUNYAC Championship, with the women coming in third overall.
