The College of Staten Island women’s tennis team are a perfect three-for-three in CUNYAC tests this season, this time by way of a 5-4 win over John Jay College in conference action played this afternoon at the CSI Tennis Center. The Dolphins improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 within the CUNYAC, while the Bloodhounds fell to 3-1, 1-1, respectively.
In what was a close one throughout, CSI was able to take a crucial 2-1 lead coming out of doubles play. In the top spot, JJ’s team of Bernarda Reyes and Rageene Berry were very crisp in an 8-0 win over CSI’s Tristiana Adragna and Aziza Jurabaeva. But CSI seized momentum the rest of the way thanks to two hard-fought wins.
In the No. 2 spot, the CSI duo of Samantha Maizer and Katherine Villarroel out-worked JJC’s Gabriela de Armas and Angelica Lozano by an 8-5 score. One rung lower in the order, freshman Mariah DeGuia teamed with sophomore Hannah Bruschi to break serve twice and take an 8-4 winner over Gabrielle Schuck and Cristina Peralta.
It was the CSI bottom of the order that then shined the rest of the way in singles play. CSI won Nos. 4-6. At No. 5, DeGuia scored a tough, 7-5, win in the first set against Schuck but backed it up with a 6-1 win in the second set to take the match. At No. 6, Guetanie Romain was efficient in a 6-3, 6-3, win over Peralta.
With CSI up, 4-2, they would win the match thanks to Villarroel at No. 4. She lost the first set to Lozado, 6-2, but then rallied to win the second set, 6-2, and the third, 6-2, to win her flight. For JJC, Reyes won at the top spot, followed by Berry at No. 2. In the third flight, JJC’s de Armas was able to outlast Jurabaeva by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
CSI is back in action on Tuesday, September 26, when they host Baruch College at the CSI Tennis Center at 3:30pm, where they will look to continue their perfect run.
