The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team kept on rolling this afternoon with a 66-48 win over the Beavers of CCNY today at The Tank. The Dolphins came into this afternoon’s game with a four-game win streak and extended that to five in a row with the CUNYAC win. The Dolphins improved to 7-1 and 3-0 in the CUNYAC while the Beavers fell to 4-4 and 1-2 in the CUNYAC.
Samantha Flecker poured in 20 points and tied a career-high with seven steals while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds in the win. Aiding Flecker was Christina Pasaturo who also scored 20 points, adding four rebounds and four assists. Victoria Crea had a season-high six assists tonight along with three steals. Diana Todaro continues to make an impact coming off of the bench for the Dolphins, tallying 9 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.
The Dolphins jumped out to a seven-point lead early in the first quarter thanks to high-quality shots. Flecker set the tempo with an early corner three ball while Pasaturo was able to weave her way inside the lane to convert a pair of layups. Jacquelyn Cali also converted a pair of layups to put the Dolphins up 11-4 over the intruding Beavers. City College of NY wouldn’t fade away as they were able to chip away at the lead and come within three points of the Dolphins with 1:24 left in the first quarter after the Beavers’ leading scorer, Ashley Brooks, knocked down a pair from the charity stripe.
Holding a five-point lead heading into the second half, the Dolphins would explode with a 13-0 run to increase their lead to 27-11. Staten Island would head into the locker room with a 21-point lead, 42-21, and full momentum.
In the second half, the Dolphins continued to pour it on the Beavers and extended their lead to a game-high 35 points with 1:41 left in the third quarter. The Beavers did have a resurgence in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Dolphins 18-2 which brought the lead down to just 18. The comeback was too little too late as the Beavers were in too deep of a deficit to come back.
CSI would pick up their fifth straight victory while staying perfect in the CUNYAC.
The Dolphins return to action on Tuesday, December 12, when they host William Paterson at 7:00 pm at The Tank.
