The College of Staten Island is celebrating another successful week with a trio of awards bestowed to them by the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Sophomore Patricia Riches was named Player of the Week for softball, while teammate Alison Meagher brought home Pitcher of the Week honors. In Men’s Tennis, David Luo was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week.
Last year’s CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Riches was flat-out dominating in CSI’s two games last week against previously-unbeaten Hunter College. She batted 6-for-7 and was on base in seven of eight plate appearances in the doubleheader sweep, tallying four doubles and two home runs with a grand total of six RBI and five runs scored. She also stole a base and was perfect in the field at shortstop in 12 chances. For the season, she had raised her batting average up to .443, and leads the team with 10 doubles, 27 hits, and a .705 slugging percentage.
Meagher, meanwhile, continues her winning ways in the circle, as she posted a 1-0 record with 0.00 ERA, surrendering two unearned runs in a 7-2 win over Hunter. She gave up six hits, not walking any while fanning three. At the plate, she helped her own cause with a two-run home run, going 4-for-7 in the weekend doubleheader at Hunter College.
An exciting freshman from the courts all season has been Luo, who got his first CUNYAC honor thanks to his 2-0 week in Singles and 3-0 in Doubles. He posted double wins against both Brooklyn and Farmingdale State at the Nos. 4 & 6 flight in Singles and in either the Nos. 2-3 flights in Doubles. All of his wins were in straight-sets.
The CSI tennis team will get back to work on Wednesday, traveling to face Wagner College at 4pm on Staten Island. The CSI Softball is next in action for a weekend set at home. On Saturday, they face Moravian College at 1:00 pm and then follow with a doubleheader against Baruch College on Sunday at 12 Noon.
