College of Staten Island freshman Andrew Kartalis earned the first weekly award of his career today, staking claim to the Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week award from the City University of New York Athletic Conference.  CSI is coming off of their first victory of the season and Kartalis was a big reason why.

Played at Hunter College, Kartalis and the Dolphins disposed of New York University, 87-67, and Kartalis would put up a career day this early into his career.  The freshman guard sunk seven of 11 shots, two from downtown, for 19 points.  he led the way on the glass as well, putting up 10 of CSI’s 33 team rebounds, also a career best and good for his first double-double at the college level.

For the season, Kartalis is averaging 6.8 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game, and his five three-pointers are second on the team.  The Dolphins will continue their season on Wednesday, when they travel to face Stevens Institute of Technology at 7pm in Hoboken, the fifth of a six-game road swing.
