The Core 100 program invites students and faculty from the College to join us for our weekly lecture series. Each week, all of the first-year students participate in lecture-discussions with about 400 of their classmates. We have space in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Williamson Theatre to accommodate individual guests and can have as many as two additional classes at each of the lectures. No permission is needed for classes to attend, but please notify Donna Scimeca (718.982.3405) if you plan to bring a class.

The lectures are 50 minutes and are all in the Williamson Theatre. They meet on the following days/times: Wednesdays at 11:15am; on Thursdays at 8:00am, 10:10am, 4:40pm, and 6:30pm; and on Saturdays at 10:10am in Building 1P, Room 119.

The focus of the Core Lecture Series this semester will be to directly link the program’s curriculum to current events.

The Lecture Series Schedule for the Week of May 6, 2019

Wednesday, May 8:  Corelandia

-11:15am: Last week Victor Miller and the other participating faculty members wrapped up this semester’s Corelandia game. This week, the students will provide feedback on their experiences playing the game and the effectiveness of aligning the role-playing game to the three curricular mandates of the course.

Thursday, May 9

-8:00am/10:10am/4:40PM/6:30pm: Based on the suggestions made by students at the end-of-semeste, student feedback panels of the Fall 2018 semester, Core students told us they wanted an opportunity to suggest topics that were not covered at the lecture series. In response to their suggestion this semester’s wrap-up lectures will be a series of Q&A lectures addressing the topics about which students wanted more information. Issues include:  sex trafficking, BREXIT, the history of the LGBTQ movement, animal testing, gun control, and the legalization of marijuana, to name of few.

Donna Scimeca, the Core Program Coordinator, will moderate the discussions between participating faculty members and students at each of the lectures.
