College of Staten Island Sustainability Program Manager Nora Santiago and Compost Ambassador Keair Brown will be representing CSI at the upcoming Conference on Climate and Compost: New Directions in NYC’s Organic Waste Policy hosted by the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College. The conference is being held on October 28-29.
Santiago and Brown will both be featured on Day One of the conference dedicated to CUNY Compost Connections. The conference day promises to “dive into the opportunities and challenges of sustainable waste management at CUNY campuses, beginning with a facilities and operations perspective from those who handle our trash and recycling every day.” Santiago and Brown plan to speak to organic waste discards on campus.
“Composting is a critical part of waste diversion,” said Santiago. “I believe it is essential to have it on each CUNY campus.”
The two-day conference will also feature discussions on waste management research, data needs for effective organic waste management practice, and expansion of composting. The goal? To bring together CUNY faculty and students to showcase their work and research, consider new opportunities for future waste-related research, and provide a platform for discussion and an exchange of ideas to help further the sustainability and waste management systems on CSI campuses.
“We are working on improving waste diversion at CSI,” Santiago explained. “We are looking forward to learning from others on how they manage their organic waste, and education campaigns to promote waste diversion.”
