Meet GIS Day 2024 speaker Dr. Åsa Rennermalm:
Dr. Åsa Rennermalm is a Professor of Geography at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She focuses on studying the Arctic, especially how climate change in the 21st Century affects the Greenland ice sheet. Her research examines how ice is melting and losing water to the oceans, which raises global sea levels. To do this, she gathers data in many different ways, including measurements of water on the ice sheet’s surface, samples of ice cores, and aerial maps taken by drones during her fieldwork in Greenland. Dr. Rennermalm also analyzes weather station data, computer model data, and satellite images using statistical methods and geographic information systems. Her goal is to improve our understanding of how the Greenland ice sheet is changing and how these changes impact the Arctic and nearby oceans.
