College of Staten Island Associate Professor Reece Peck recently appeared in a Politico feature discussing the impact of social media, or lack thereof, in the 2024 presidential election. Peck posits on the narrative that emerged after Donald Trump’s 2016 victory regarding the role of social media in shaping political outcomes. Peck acknowledges that in the wake of both Trump’s win and the Brexit referendum, there was widespread concern about the influence of social media, with many attributing the outcomes to the manipulation of public opinion through platforms like Facebook and the use of algorithms.
