The College of Staten Island’s Legal Studies Institute is pleased to present its Spring 2025 Lecture, featuring A Life in the Law: A Conversation with The Hon. Gerard E. Lynch. The event takes place on Tuesday, March 4, between 4:30 – 6:30pm in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall (1P-120). The event will be livestreamed on CSI-TV.
Judge Gerard E. Lynch, a distinguished legal scholar and jurist, has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit since his appointment by President Barack Obama in 2009. Prior to that, he was a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of New York from 2000 to 2009. An award-winning professor and former federal prosecutor, Judge Lynch has taught courses on civil procedure and appellate advocacy, making significant contributions to the field of criminal justice.
Judge Lynch graduated first in his class from Columbia College and from Columbia Law School, where he later became a faculty member in 1977. He also served as the Law School’s vice dean from 1992 to 1997. His impressive career includes clerking for both Judge Wilfred Feinberg on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice William Brennan Jr. on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Beyond academia, he has played a crucial role in legal practice, serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Chief of the Criminal Division. He has been involved in multiple special prosecutions investigating government corruption and has contributed extensively to legal scholarship, particularly on sentencing and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
This engaging discussion will offer students and faculty alike a unique opportunity to hear from a leading legal mind about his experiences in the law and the evolution of the legal system over the years.
