The College of Staten Island proudly celebrated Staten Island’s own Colin Jost during a special hooding ceremony and Q&A session in the campus’ Recital Hall. Jost, a writer, comedian, and actor best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, received the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his outstanding contributions to comedy, television, and community service.

Due to his calendar, Jost could not attend CSI’s Commencement ceremonies on May 28, but did offer students at graduation inspiring words of praise and achievement through video. Today’s event featured a cross-section of students and recent alumni, faculty, and staffers at the College.

The event began with a warm welcome from Cheryl Adolph, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and the CSI Foundation, who introduced CSI President Dr. Timothy G. Lynch. President Lynch conferred the honorary degree, praising Jost’s creativity, resilience, and commitment to uplifting young voices through education and writing.

“It’s our honor to recognize Colin Jost, a proud Staten Island native, whose work has earned him widespread acclaim for his wit, insight, and contribution to American comedy,” President Lynch remarked. “His achievements exemplify the creativity, resilience, and community spirit that define the College of Staten Island.”

Provost Michael Steiper then moderated an engaging Q&A session, where students and faculty had the opportunity to ask Jost about his career, his Staten Island roots, and his journey from writing at the Staten Island Advance to becoming co-anchor of SNL’s “Weekend Update.” Jost’s father, Dan Jost, a retired Staten Island Tech High School teacher, and his mother, Dr. Kerry Kelly, the FDNY’s first female Chief Medical Officer, were also in attendance, adding a special familial touch to the event.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a lively reception in the Atrium, where attendees had the chance to greet Jost and celebrate his achievements together.
