A visit filled with discussion, connection, and optimism points to a bright future for CSI’s international recruitment efforts.
The College of Staten Island welcomed a distinguished guest this past week as Rita Moriconi, the Department of State’s EducationUSA Regional Educational Advising Manager (REAC) for the Southern Cone of South America, visited campus to explore opportunities for expanding international collaboration. Moriconi oversees nearly 100 EducationUSA advising centers across Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Her visit began with a special Staten Island tradition—a lunch from Joe and Pat’s, one of the Borough’s most iconic pizzerias. Over lunch, she met with Alexander Scott, Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management; Dr. Stephen Ferst, Executive Director of the Center for Global Engagement; Christian Perticone, Director of the English Language Institute; and Michael Ivany, International Admissions Adviser. The group engaged in thoughtful discussions on international student recruitment and building stronger institutional partnerships with universities across South America.
Following the lunch meeting, Moriconi toured the CSI campus, guided by Ivany and student orientation mentors, Isabella Tobi and Patrick McCabe. What was meant to be a brief introduction to CSI extended well beyond schedule as Moriconi found herself captivated by the College’s facilities, atmosphere, and students.
“The excellent students you put in charge of the tour were a highlight,” Moriconi remarked. “I hope to stay connected and help in the best way we can. EducationUSA is present and representing in many countries for CSI!”
Looking ahead, Moriconi expressed enthusiasm for promoting CSI’s programs across her region and for creating new opportunities for collaboration with South American universities. Her role within EducationUSA will help ensure that more students from Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay learn about what CSI has to offer.
Dr. Stephen Ferst expressed his enthusiasm for what the visit represents: “Hosting Rita Mariconi marks another step towards CSI realizing its goal as a global and destination campus. Her visit advances our efforts to introduce CSI to students from South America so they can discover what we offer, join our vibrant learning community, and become future Dolphins.”
Perticone echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of students in shaping global connections. “This couldn’t have been a more positive experience,” he said. “It’s easy to see all we offer through the eyes of our student mentors. I’m sure we’re building bridges abroad.”
Moriconi’s visit concluded with optimism and excitement for the future of CSI’s international engagement. Her leadership within EducationUSA promises to amplify the College’s profile throughout South America, fostering deeper connections and opening doors for future students to discover the opportunities available on Staten Island.
