The College of Staten Island’s Latin American, Caribbean & Latina/o Studies Program (LACLS) will host “A Dialogue on Slavery of Black Africans in Spain and the Spanish Caribbean” on Tuesday, February 10, from 12-2pm in Room 2S-215. Presented in celebration of Black History Month, the event will feature scholar Dr. Lissette Acosta Corniel, Associate Professor in the Department of Race and Ethnic Studies at Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY.

Dr. Acosta Corniel’s talk will explore the transatlantic systems of bondage that shaped Spain and the Spanish Caribbean, with particular attention to the lived experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants. She is the editor of Transatlantic Bondage: Slavery and Freedom in Spain, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico (SUNY Press), a work that examines slavery, resistance, and freedom across imperial and cultural boundaries. The dialogue will be introduced by Dr. Álvaro Baquero-Peciño.

The event is also organized by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, and the Spanish Program, with co-sponsorship from the African and African Diaspora Studies Program, the Council of Interdisciplinary Studies, the International Studies Program, and the Spanish Club. The campus community is encouraged to attend this timely and interdisciplinary discussion.
