RN-to-BS students from the College of Staten Island recently visited LiveOnNY in Long Island City for an immersive clinical experience as part of NRS 410: Community Health Nursing, a six-credit course focused on public health nursing practice.

Coordinated by Professor Regina Lama, the visit gave students an up-close look at the organ donation and transplantation process. Students toured simulation rooms, learned about the procedures involved in organ recovery, and observed three kidneys prepared for transport to their recipients.

The experience also offered powerful personal perspectives on the impact of organ donation. Students heard from the mother of an organ donor as well as a liver transplant recipient who spoke about their lived experience.

Clinical faculty for NRS 410 include Dr. Jennifer Macchiarola, Professor Cynthia Karczewski, and Professor Regina Lama. The visit provided students with a meaningful opportunity to connect classroom learning with real clinical practice, bringing to life their understanding of community health, compassionate patient care, and the life-changing impact of organ donation.
