The CSI English Department is looking forward to welcoming Mongane Wally Serote, the Poet Laureate of South Africa, to our campus. Please consider taking advantage of this incredible opportunity to see this internationally renowned figure read his works on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 2:30pm in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Recital Hall.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising in South Africa, a central event in the anti-apartheid movement. Wally Serote’s life and career have been entwined with the struggle of South Africa. Throughout his career of more than 20 books and multiple awards, he has weathered 18 years in exile, the rise and independence of South Africa, and the trials and triumphs of governance as he was eventually elected to serve in his country’s parliament. The octogenarian Serote is among the last of his generation–a walking literary chronicle of the birthing of a nation out of the grip of apartheid.
