The Dolphins volleyball team took their first win of the season over the College of New Rochelle on Saturday afternoon in an intense 3-2 finish. CSI took the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-23 while New Rochelle took the next two, 25-20 and 25-16; CSI finished it off with a 15-11 win to take the game victory. CSI extends to a 1-7 record.
The first game was the most intense as both teams went point for point the entire set. With the score tied at 23 a kill by Samantha Fink put the Dolphins ahead by 1. CSI scored the winning point from an attack error on New Rochelle.
Again, the second set began with very close play as the teams went back-and-forth with the scoring. The Dolphins saw themselves down two points as the score reached 22-20 but two CSI service ace’s helped tie the game. The next three points went to the Dolphins as New Rochelle tallied three errors in a row.
A 5-0 start for the Dolphins looked like a hopeful final set but the Blue Angels of New Rochelle wouldn’t go down without a fight. New Rochelle came back and took the lead until CSI was able to tie the game at 20 with a kill by Joanna Tepedino. However, the Dolphins followed with three receiving errors helped the Blue Angels take the third set by a score of 25-20.
It seemed the fourth set belonged to New Rochelle as CSI saw themselves in an 11 point deficit at one occasion. The Dolphins tallied 31 attacks with just three kills.
With each team holding two sets a piece it came down to the final set. The Blue Angels came out strong taking a 3-0 start but the Dolphins came back to tie the game at 4 with a kill by Kaitlyn Flynn before extending to an 8-5 lead as the teams changed court sides. From there the game was in CSI’s hands as they finished 15-11.
Leading the Dolphins was Joanna Tepedino with nine kills, 8 digs and four blocks. Danielle Ponsiglione had 14 assists and added 10 digs. Diana Stout added with 10 digs, three kills and two assists.
CSI will be back in action on Tuesday, September 28th as they head to Manhattan to face CCNY in a 7:00 pm game.
