The College of Staten Island Intramural Program held its first ever Student vs. Faculty/Staff Soccer Game yesterday afternoon at the CSI Soccer Complex. Faculty/Staff scored the game winning goal in the final minute of play to win the game, 3-2.
In what was a thrilling match-up from the start both teams would trade possession for most of the first half. A few nice saves by faculty/staff goal keeper Besim Gjonbalaj and good help defense by Katie Arcuri helped in keeping the score, 0-0, after one half of play (20 minute halves were played).
All bets were off in the second half as the students struck first with a goal by Ahmed El-Ghareib in the 24th minute of play to give the Students a 1-0 lead. Only a few minutes later, Faculty/Staff would have revenge when a hand ball foul was called inside the box that would lead to a penalty kick for R.J. Allen who would sink it to the tie the game, 1-1. In the 33rd minute of play, Demi-Jean Martorano would drill one in the net and give faculty/staff a 2-1 lead. The students would answer with some dazzle as Vincenzo Mancuso scored the game-tying goal with a deep shot from the top of the box in the 37th minute of play. With the score tied 2-2, faculty/staff turned to the men’s soccer assistant coach Allen and head coach John Tardy to play a little two-man game. Tardy would end the game with a goal deep in the Students box to go up, 3-2 with only 38 seconds left to play, assisted by non-other than Allen.
Faculty/Staff won the game 3-2 and are now 2-0 against the students after beating them in the Student vs. Faculty/Staff Intramural Volleyball Game earlier in the month. The College of Staten Island Intramural Program will next hold Student vs. Faculty/Staff Basketball, Softball and possibly Kickball and Wiffle ball games.
