The College of Staten Island women’s basketball squad won for the fourth-straight outing, this time sliding past the College of New Rochelle by a 67-36 count in non-conference action played this evening in New Rochelle, New York. The Dolphins improved to 4-3 overall, while the Blue Angels fell to 3-5.
CSI led from start to finish, opening up a 9-3 lead before taking a 17-5 lead on free throws by Melanie Johnson at 14:13 to go in the first half. After trading baskets, CSI opened a 28-12 lead just over four minutes later on a fast break effort by Megan Mhyre, and from there, CSI seemed well on their way, sporting 34-22 lead by intermission.
The Dolphins exploded for a 12-2 run to start the second frame, including the first six points from Johnson. CNR was able to cut the CSi lead down to 18 on a Jasmin Brandon jumper at 13:13 to make it 48-30, but CSi answered the call from there. The Dolphins finished the game on a 7-0 run, to win by 31 points, their biggest margin of the game.
Johnson led all CSI scorers with 17 markers adding three rebounds. Olivia Tierno cast a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Mhyre added 10 points and five rebounds. Brandon led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, adding 14 rebounds. CSI forced 33 Angels turnovers, and out-rebounded CNR, 54-42.
The Dolphins are next in action on Saturday, when they host New York University at 3pm. Before that the CSI men will tip-off against FDU-Florham at 1pm.
