Maxine Jasko went 4-7 with three RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader

Winners of eight out of their last 10 games, the College of Staten Island women’s softball squad continued their roll this afternoon, taking a doubleheader sweep off of CUNYAC-rivals Brooklyn College at the CSI Softball Complex. CSI won the opener, 13-1, in a game shortened to five innings, while taking the second tilt, 5-0. The Dolphins improved to 10-7 overall and a perfect 4-0 in CUNYAC play, while the Bulldogs fell to 11-7, 4-2, respectively.

It was all CSI in the opener, as the Dolphins opened up a quick lead and never looked back. After CSI starter Victoria Procopio held BC in the top of the first, CSI had their turn and punched home four big runs. Brittany Smith came home via an error after scoring a bunt single to open the frame. Later, Danielle Locke plated Stefanie Solari via a single, and then Samantha Tallerine laced a two-RBI single of her own to plate Maxine Jasko and Christina Tufano.

BC got a run back in the second inning, when a Procopio error allowed Amanda Bisz to score, who started the inning off with an infield single. Up 4-1, CSI then retaliated, scoring two runs in their turn of the second to take a commanding lead. This time Jasko provided the fireworks with a two-run single. If CSI left little doubt after two innings, they put things to virtual rest with a six-run third inning to make the score 12-1, spearheaded by five hits and two more Brooklyn errors. Solari popped in an RBI-double before Tallerine scored another two-run single, part of a four-RBI day for the sophomore.

Tufano plated another CSI run in the fourth to make it 13-1. BC threatened in the fifth, loading the bases, but Procopio settled in time to retire the side, taking the win, allowing the lone run on seven hits, fanning two. BC’s Marie Oneto took the loss, pitching a total of one inning, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits, walking one.

Procopio took the circle in the second game as well, and was extremely solid, allowing three hits in the complete-game shutout win. BC’s Kayla Hill was just as good, matching Procopio as the teams went into the 4th inning tied 0-0. There, CSI finally broke through. After Procopio opened things with a single, Tufano doubled the centerfield, plating Procopio for the 1-0 lead. One inning later, CSI doubled their lead to 2-0 thanks to a three BC errors and a sac fly from Chyanne Gilliam.

Up by a modest 2-0 score, CSI put some distance between the sides with a three-run sixth inning. A triple from Jasko opened up the scoring, plating Solari, and Jasko then took home on a Tufano single. Later in the inning, Jennie Hosty would plate Tallerine, who earned on via a fielder’s choice.

Up 5-0, Procopio gave up a lone hit in the seventh before retiring the Bulldogs and picking up her seventh win of the season. CSI out-hit BC, 8-3, in the second game, led by Tufano’s 3-3 performance with 2 RBI.

Next up for CSI will be a non-conference doubleheader on the road at William Paterson University on Thursday, April 11, at 3:30pm.
