The College of Staten Island women’s soccer team failed to build on their previous win this weekend, falling to visiting Mount St. Vincent today at the CSI Soccer Complex in Staten Island, NY, on a cool, rainy afternoon.  The visiting Dolphins scored two second-half goals to post a 2-0 shutout over CSI.  With the win, Mt. St. Vincent advanced to 4-0 on the season while the Dolphins fell to 1-3-1 overall on the season. This is the first time since the 2006 season that the Dolphins have only one win through their first five games.

The visiting Dolphins dominated the first half as they were constantly pressuring the CSI half of the field and had a 10-4 shot advantage.  CSI had their best opportunity with 11:54 minutes remaining when a through ball over the top by Melissa Gelardi cleared the back line and a surging Stephanie Rivera had a chance but MSV keeper Elizabeth Martin was able to get a touch on it to and keep the Dolphins off the board.

At the half the score remained 0-0.

The visiting Dolphins entered the scoreboard when Erin Dailey sent a through ball through a gap in the back line to an open Megan DeRosa who was able to power a shot far post over Kristy Colangelo to put Mt. St. Vincent up 1-0 with just under 30 minutes to play.

CSI’s offense seemed out of sync today as they couldn’t string together a series of passes to really threaten the visiting Dolphins.  The offensive nature of Mt. St. Vincent’s 3-4-3 formation really showed in the shot count as the visiting Dolphins had 16 shots to just four for CSI with 13:00 minutes remaining.  Mt. St. Vincent kept CSI’s leader in assists Gelardi quiet for the entire game.

Mt. St. Vincent scored their second goal with five minutes remaining in the game when Julia McGowan sent in a low cross to DeRosa who tucked it under Colangelo for her second, and the team’s second goal of the game.

Mt. St. Vincent led the final shot count, 20-4, and their shots were accurate as 11 of them were on target while 2 of CSI’s shots were on target.  There was one caution in the game and that was awarded to Alyssa Colasurdo.

CSI will be back in action on Wednesday, September 17 at 4pm, where they will play Medgar Evers College in their first CUNYAC game of the year at the CSI Soccer Complex.
