The College of Staten Island women’s volleyball squad squared off against the CUNYAC leaders in the standings on Tuesday and fell hard, losing to Hunter College, 3-0, in Manhattan. The Hawks scored the win by scores of 25-7, 25-20, and 25-10. CSI fell to 8-12 overall and 3-5 to finish CUNYAC, while Hunter advanced to a league-best 19-13 overall and 8-0 in the CUNYAC, clinching them the regular season championship.
CSI could not find any rhythm tonight, spreading out only a total of 17 kills in the three games combined, compared to 37 for Hunter on just 77 attempts, good for a heavy .364 average. In the evening’s second set, the Dolphins showed plenty of grit, falling behind 11-3 before mounting a steady comeback to make things interesting. A couple of kills by Brittany Minondo and another pair by Jonaldy Edouard and Vanessa Reyes got CSI back to within 19-17, but Hunter surged from there to take the set, 25-20.
HC’s Lucia Stosic led the way with 10 kills; Kristine Ciurcina added 29 assists, while Karolina Gajda added four aces and five digs. For CSI, Edouard led the way with five kills, while Victoria Wong chimed in defensively with six digs.
CSI will be back in action this weekend when they participate in the NJCU volleyball tournament where they will play four games in two days in a round-robin format.
