The College of Staten Island men’s basketball team swept all three of its games this past week, and forward Will Fonseca was a big reason why. The junior can celebrate it with his fourth CUNYAC Player of the Week selection, it was announced today. It is also the second week in a row that he bagged the honor.
In three games last week, Fonseca was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Dolphins each time. The week started with a 70-58 road win over Kean University, and after a slow start, Fonseca went on to score 23 points on 9-16 shooting, adding 11 rebounds while blocking a shot and collecting three steals. Two days later, in their only conference game of the year, Fonseca dumped 29 points on Hunter College on a remarkable 12-16 shooting performance, adding 10 rebounds while blocking a shot and garnering four steals.
On Saturday, the Dolphins came from 17 points behind in the second half to knock out St. Joseph’s College – Brooklyn, 92-87, and again Fonseca led the charge. The junior muscled in 32 points on 16-25 shooting, collecting 10 rebounds while blocking a shot.
For the week, Fonseca averaged 28 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest, and shot a blistering 64.9% from the hardwood.
CSI, 13-5 overall and 7-2 in the CUNYAC, have now won six straight games, and will resume activity on Wednesday, January 28, at 7:30pm, against John Jay College.
