The College of Staten Island men’s baseball squad recently wrapped up a five-game swing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as part of the Cal Ripken Division III Experience Week, going 2-3 in the set. For his personal performance to kick off the season CSI hurler Brian Russell earned the season-opening Pitcher of the Week award from the City University of New York Athletic Conference, it was announced last night.
Russell got the ball for the CSI opener against Grove City College, and the first-year CSI sophomore did not relinquish it, going seven full innings for the complete game two-hitter. Russell gave up one unearned run in the game as CSI prevailed 4-1. The Grove City lineup batted just .091 against hit and Russell fanned eight batters through his complete game.
CSI finished their trip with a record of 2-3 overall. They have been idle since March 9, when they dropped a 9-7 decision to Catholic University. CSI is next in action on Saturday, when they travel to face Stevens Institute of Technology for a 12pm, 9-inning, non-conference matinee.
