In what was the College of Staten Island’s first game since their weekend getaway to Myrtle Beach nearly two weeks ago, the Dolphins lost a tight one to Stevens Tech, 2-0, in a non-conference, single match in Hoboken, NJ. CSI fell to 2-4, losing their fourth-straight, while the Ducks powered to 7-4.
It was early damage that proved fatal for the Dolphins. CSI gave up only five hits through the eight innings they played defense, but it proved enough for Stevens. A lead-off walk by Brian Russell issued to Brian Hennelly in the second inning was a key. Hennelly was moved to second via sacrifice, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch, before being sent home on a sac fly by Marc Calleo. Without the benefit of a hit Stevens led, 1-0, and that run would prove to be the game-winner.
Stevens added another digit, unearned, in the third inning to make it 2-0, and from there, Stevens ace Robert Robbins hurled a gem of his own, yielding only four hits through a complete-game, fanning seven. The Dolphins did have a chance in the bottom of the 9th, but would end up stranding a pair or runners on base.
Russell would take the loss depite going a solid six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits. Mike Fitzpatrick pitched two innings of scoreless and hitless relief as well.
Field conditions have wiped out Sunday’s double against Stevens Tech slated for Sunday at CSI, so CSI will next look to back onto the field on Tuesday, when they travel to face William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ, at 3:30pm.
