The College of Staten Island men’s tennis team ran their CUNYAC mark to a perfect 5-0, taking a 7-2 victory over Brooklyn College as part of conference play at Brooklyn. CSI is now 5-1 overall, while Brooklyn fell to 4-5 overall and 2-2 within CUNY.
After doubles was complete, CSI held a modest 2-1 lead. Chris Pinto and Raymond Hwang played for the first time in the No. 2 position, and out-lasted BC’s Jonathan Chevinsky and Albert Benjamin, 8-5. One rung lower, CSI’s team of Austin Kapetanakis and Nolan Reese were crisp in an 8-3 winner over Jordan Ovadia and Asher Korycka.
As good as the Dolphins were in doubles, they were even better in singles, scoring six wins in seven flights. Ed Ruffe was a winner at No .1, defeating Elliot Haddad, 6-3, 6-0. Chris Livoti scored a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Kapetanakis won a 6-4, 6-3, match vs. Chevinskiy. In good matches that came down to final tie-breaking sets, Pinto won at No. 5 over Trevaughn Daley, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Hwang was a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, winner over BC’s Marvin Gill at No. 6.
CSI’s only loss came at No. 4, where Stanley Purcell had just enough to turn back CSI’s Andrew Adia, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
CSI will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to face Sarah Lawrence College for a non-conference test at 6:30pm in Bronxville, NY.
