Jaime Alves is a social anthropologist and activist in the Black Movement in Sao Paulo/Brazil. He holds a PhD in Anthropology and Black Studies from The University of Texas at Austin, and a postdoctoral degree from the Africana Research Center at Penn State. Currently, he is undertaking a long-term project on police terror, black criminality and black insurgency in Brazil, Colombia and the United States. A book manuscript, tentatively titled Macabre Spatialities: State Delinquency and the Struggle for Black Urban Life in Brazil, draws on Jaime’s work with the Black Movement and anti-prison activists in Sao Paulo. As a journalist, Jaime has contributed to alternative newspapers in Brazil and written regularly in his blog “com raiva e paciência” (with anger and patience).
