It took overtime, but the College of Staten Island women’s soccer team was victorious today, taking a pivotal, 1-0, win over John Jay as part of CUNYAC play at Randall’s Island. With the win CSI improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 within the CUNYAC, while the Bloodhounds fell to 1-6-2, 0-1-2, respectively.
The two teams battled in what were very tough conditions, between the whipping winds and icy mist that rained on the players for much of the game. What resulted was a 0-0 tie after 90 minutes.
It appeared that the game would be headed into a second overtime, but with only a minute to go in the first overtime stanza, Samantha Wysokowski found herself in a one-on-one breakaway situation, and was able to find the back of the net, giving CSI the golden goal victory. Kristy Colangelo earned the shutout for CSI, making five saves.
The win puts CSI on the doorstep of clinching a CUNYAC Tournament berth. CSI can do that with a win in either of its final two CUNYAC games this season.
