After showcasing in their lone meet a week ago against Adelphi University, the College of Staten Island men’s swimming & diving team swept the lot of weekly awards from the City University of New York Athletic Conference. Junior Tim Sweeney took home the coveted Performer of the Week accolade for his record setting night, and added a Player of the Week win from CollegeSwimming.com as well. Meanwhile Adil El Haddad took Diver of the Week and Jonathan Gorinshteyn grabbed Rookie of the Week honors from the CUNYAC.
Sweeney headlined the meet, grabbing two first place finishes in individual competition. The first race was the memorable one, as Sweeney posted a 1:44.14 time in the 200-yard Freestyle breaking a CSI and CUNYAC record that was set in 1992. Later in the meet he earned another gold place when he raced to a 51.78 in the 100-yard Butterfly, winning a tight race there. To finish up his evening, Sweeney swam in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay, helping CSI post a 3:24.15 time and a second place finish against NCAA Division II Adelphi University. For the season, Sweeney leads all Dolphins in points generated and individual medals won.
Competing in his first collegiate meet at home, Adil El Haddad certainly made his work on the boards known to all. In one-meter competition, he nabbed 175.25 points, good for first overall and on the three-meter boards, he was just as good, scoring 160.65, again good for first place.
Grabbing his first CUNYAC honor of the season was Gorinshteyn in the Rookie of the Week category. Against the tough NCAA Division II competition in the pool, Gorinshteyn garnered three second-place finishes, all in diverse categories. First, he scored a 2:13.07 finish in the 200-yard Individual Medley, and later he grabbed a 53.32 finish in the 50-yard Freestyle event. In the penultimate event of the evening, he missed a win by just two-tenths of a second, finishing for second at 1:05.58.
?CSI is now 4-4 this season and a perfect 3-0 in CUNYAC competition. They will put that undefeated record on the line on Tuesday, when they host York College at the Sports & Recreation Center at 6pm in their regular season finale.
