The Department of English presents “This Muslim American Life” with Moustafa Bayoumi, Professor of English, Brooklyn College (CUNY) on Thursday, Feb. 25 the Center for the Arts Screening Room (Building 1P, Room 223) from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
Professor Moustafa Bayoumi observes that being a Muslim American today means living in an “absurd space between exotic and dangerous and between victim and villain simply because of people’s assumptions about you.” In his new book, This Muslim American Life: Dispatches from the War on Terror, Prof. Bayoumi writes about living in that space in the years since 9/11. At a time when some American politicians have seriously considered the idea of requiring Muslims to carry religious identity cards, Prof. Bayoumi will discuss the ways that the War on Terror has produced what he calls “a culture of fear and suspicion” and threatened to erode civil liberties for all Americans.
