The Schwerner Writer’s Series presents Malachi Black and Shelley Puhak on Thursday, Mar. 24 in the Library Archive Room (Building 1L, Room 216) from 2:30pm to 4:00pm.
Malachi Black is the author of Storm Toward Morning (Copper Canyon Press, 2014). He holds a BA from New York University, an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers, and a PhD in Literature with Creative Writing emphasis from the University of Utah. The recipient of a 2009 Ruth Lilly Fellowship (awarded by the Poetry Foundation in conjunction with Poetry magazine), Black has since received fellowships and awards from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Emory University, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the MacDowell Colony, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and Yaddo. He is an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of San Diego and lives in California.
Shelley Puhak is a poet and writer from Baltimore, MD. She is the author of two poetry collections. Guinevere in Baltimore was selected by Charles Simic for the 2012 Anthony Hecht Prize. Her first poetry collection, Stalin in Aruba, was awarded the 2010 Towson Prize for Literature. She is also the author of a chapbook, The Consolation of Fairy Tales. Her poems have appeared in many journals, including Beloit Poetry Journal, FIELD, Kenyon Review Online, Missouri Review, Ninth Letter, North American Review, and Verse Daily. She is the Eichner Professor of Creative Writing at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
