Please join us for the Dean’s Symposium, entitled “Children’s Rights,” on Tuesday, Apr. 19 in the Center for the Arts Screening Room (Building 1P, Room 223) from 2:30pm to 4:00pm.
The speakers will be:
-Comfort Asanbe, Associate Professor, Psychology
-Lara Saguisag, Assistant Professor, English
-Esther Son, Assistant Professor, Social Work
A professor of psychology will address the alarming estimate that by 2020, 2.3 million South African children under the age of 18 will be orphaned as a result of losing their parents to HIV/AIDS, and she will highlight issues of mental health and gender difference involved in caring for these children. A professor of social work will focus on the challenges facing Asian American children with special healthcare needs, and will suggest how changes in policy and practice can help parents advocate for these children. A professor of English will argue that the contemporary discourse of children’s rights should inform the scholarly study of children’s literature, enhancing our appreciation of children as creators and critics rather than merely passive consumers of entertainment.
