The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team got up early and never looked back, coasting by John Jay College on the road as part of CUNYAC play, 79-49, in Manhattan. The win lifted the Dolphins to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the CUNYAC, while John Jay fell to 1-16, 1-8, respectively.
CSI got out to a sizable early lead, opening up the game scoring 18 straight after JJC scored the opening basket of the game. Rosa Perone scored seven of CSI’s first 12 points and then Christina Pasaturo nailed back-to-back three’s to make it an 18-2 lead with a couple of minutes to play in the first quarter. Samantha Flecker added four points later in the frame and Angelique rolled in uncontested to then give CSI it’s biggest lead 26-7 to end the first stanza.
It was more of the same in the second as CSI continued to ride the fast break to transition baskets while forcing the home Bloodhounds to 16 first half turnovers. After a Cassandra Taylor got the CSI lead down to 36-18, CSI rolled to a 10-0 run, sparked by two Pasaturo lay-ups to give CSI its biggest lead, at 1:32 remaining at 46-18. CSI would lead 46-20 at intermission.
With CSI up comfortably, the Dolphins were able to cruise from there. The visitors took their time offensively and out-scored JJC 18-17 in the frame, but that proved more than enough of a lead. Pasaturo banked 10 of CSI’s points in the frame.
Three-pointers by Nihada Bracid and Pasaturo gave CSI their biggest leads at 35 points in the fourth quarter, eventually landing with a 79-49 final of victory.
Pasaturo would lead all scorers, finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Price was next in line with 15 points, while Flecker finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Cassandra Taylor led all Bloodhounds with 20 points while Karen Rosario ended with 10 boards. CSI held a 46-38 advantage and forced 26 Bloodhounds turnovers to their 16.
CSI will next be in action on Friday, when they travel for another CUNYAC test, this time against City College of New York at 5pm on Friday evening.
