College of Staten Island men’s basketball hoops star Frank Schettino got great news today, earning the ECAC Metro NY/NJ region’s Player of the Year honor as well as an invitation to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III All-Star Game in Salem, VA, next weekend. The citations from the two separate agencies come on the heels of a record breaking season and career for the senior, one that was capped with a CUNYAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
An offensive juggernaut since opening day, Schettino capped his senior season with monster offensive numbers leading the team with an even 18.0 points per game, with a school record 258 assists, the highest total in the nation, an average of 9.2 per game. Schettino was also second on the squad in rebounds at 7.2 per contest and was tops on the team with 73 steals, good for eighth nationally. The senior registered an unprecedented five triple-doubles, also a national high, with no other player registering more than one this season.
The former ECAC Rookie of the Year in 2013-14, Schettino was humbled by the honor from the regional organization. “It’s an incredible honor,” said Schettino. “Coming into the season I had very high expectations, but to get all these awards is unbelievable.”
Schettino is still in the running for other major awards this season, among then NABC All-District and All-America honors. In the meantime, Schettino will hoop it up with nearly 30 others as part of the Reese’s NABC All-Star Game in Salem next weekend, just prior to the Division III National Championship Game.
“I’m just very blessed and thankful,” said the point guard.
Schettino finished his career as the School’s all-time single-game, single-season, and career assists leader. He also broke the school’s all time career steals record and matched his single game record for points in a game with 43 against CCNY earlier this season. The Dolphins were able to secure their 14th CUNYAC title, and the first for Schettino, with a later season win against CCNY, part of an undefeated season for the Dolphins against CUNYAC competition.
