The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team stayed perfect in the New Year, and extended their win streak to three games with a 79-60 win over Lancaster Bible College earlier today at the Sports & Recreation Center as part of non-league play. CSI, playing in their second game in two days, extended to 11-2 overall while the visiting Chargers fell to 6-7.
Both teams battled back-and-forth through most of the first half before CSI began to pull away in the third quarter.
Before that, four lead changes dictated the first 10 minutes. LBC took an early, 6-2, advantage thanks to two baskets from Courtney Goyak, who landed a double-double in the first quarter alone. Two baskets by Angelique Price for CSI, the last a three, gave the Dolphins their first lead at 9-7 at 6:14. CSI would grow cols, and the Chargers took advantage as Goyak put the visitors back up, 14-13, at 3:39, but CSI would finish on an 11-6 run the rest of the way to take a 24-20 lead into the first intermission. Five-straight points by Christina Pasaturo and a finalizing basket by Samantha Flecker did the trick, and the Dolphins never trailed from there.
In the second stanza, a Caitlin Hickey three closed LBC to within 32-29, but CSi caught fire from there, and Flecker bagged two three-pointers to give CSI their first double-digit lead at 1:44 of the half, going up 42-31, helping them take a 43-33 lead into intermission.
CSI then held LBC off of the scoreboard for nearly the first four minutes of the third quarter, going up 49-35 on another lay-in by Pasaturo. The later, a three-pointer from Victoria Crea swung open a 17-point lead, one they would keep, 64-47, going into the final stanza.
A crisp shooting CSI squad would land a 20-point lead on two occasions, the first when Rosa Perone posted a lay-up to make it 74-54 at 6:42. The Dolphins would ultimately go up by as many as 21 and never led by less than 15 in the final minutes, settling for the lop-sided 79-60 final.
A day after scoring a season-high 23 points at Baruch, Flecker topped all scorers with 25 points to go with seven rebounds for CSI, shooting 8-16 from the floor. Pasaturo was next in line with 24 points, scoring five assists as well. Crea would finish with 12 points. Goyak put up a 17-point, 18-rebound performance for LBC, matched by Hickey’s 17 points as well in 37 minutes of action. The Dolphins forced 21 Chargers turnovers, and shot over 44% to LBC’s 38%.
CSI will gain a day’s rest before getting back to action at Medgar Evers College on Tuesday.
