Staten Island, NY | Megan McEwan, for the second game in a row, set a career record in points scored. This afternoon, McEwan poured in 20 points, topping her previous best of 16, in the 53-43 win over New York University. The win boosted Staten Island to 2-0 to start the year, while the Violets start their season 0-1.

Rosa Perone opened up scoring for the Dolphins with a mid-range jumper which was an answer to the Violets’ opening three-point bucket one minute earlier. Liv Linebarger converted a fast-break layup, giving NYU a 5-2 lead. Down three, the Dolphins went on a 14-3 run to end the opening quarter to take a 16-8 lead. The Violets were able to bring it within three in the early goings of the second quarter when Casey O’Connor converted a layup. There were just three baskets made in the second quarter as both teams struggled to cash in on their attempts. The lone basket made by the Dolphins was a jumper by McEwan which gave CSI an 18-13 lead.

The start of the third quarter looked like the second quarter was going to repeat itself, however, both teams were able to regain form and find the bottom of the net. NYU tied it up with 6:12 remaining in the third, however, McEwan was able to give the Dolphins the lead back with a layup off of a pass from Kayla Schmitter. Both teams would go scoreless for three minutes before Nicole Imbesi sliced to the hoop to lay one in. The Dolphins went into the final quarter of action with a five-point lead despite shooting just 16.67% from the floor. 

Scoring was plentiful in the final stanza as both teams elevated their play.  Both teams had their best shooting quarter of the game in the fourth, with the Dolphins having the better end at 62.5%. Diana Todaro battled her way into the paint for an and-one to get the Dolphins started. Todaro then gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 11 points, when Schmitter found her inside for an easy layup. The Violets wouldn’t bow out without a fight. NYU was able to cut it to just four with 2:02 remaining after Linebarger made a layup.  Brianna Robisky sank both of her attempts from the charity stripe to give the Dolphins a six-point lead, a lead they were able to hang onto for the rest of the game. The Violets relied on the three-ball late in the game to no avail.

McEwan finished the game with 20 points, and eight rebounds while Perone added 10 points and four rebounds. Robisky and Schmitter each picked up a pair of assists while Jacqueline Cali added six rebounds in the win. 

Up next for the Dolphins is their first road test of the season when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on non-conference foes, William Paterson at 6:00 pm.
