After a very busy week that was for College of Staten Island athletics, several Dolphins were rewarded handsomely by the City University of New York Athletic Conference, as CSI tallied five weekly awards. Top honors were handed out to freshman Domenick Castiglione, as he earned Baseball Player of the Week honors. Teammate Nick Falcone took home Baseball Rookie of the Week honors as well. Over on the softball diamond, Alison Meagher was named the CUNYAC’s Pitcher of the Week, and then on the track & field circuit, CSI gained Rookie of the Week honors for both Deavion Brown and Jared Nusser.
Perhaps no team had more success than the CSI Baseball team, as after splitting a doubleheader against the College of New Rochelle, they posted four-straight CUNYAC wins over Baruch College and Lehman College, completing a very successful weekend. The center of the success came in Domenick Castiglione, who earned Rookie of the Week honors early this season as well. Castiglione had a sensational week through the six games games. He batted an even .500 (11-22) with nine RBI and three runs scored. He also walked once, stole a base, and was perfect in the field. He came on in a non-save appearance and also pitched two scoreless innings against Lehman fanning three in a 15-6 win. That same game, he went 4-5 at the plate. For the season, he is batting .376, good for third-highest on the unit.
After missing a pair of games due to injury, freshman Nick Falcone came back into the lineup for the four-straight CUNYAC games, and he was fantastic. The Rookie of the Week batted.562 (9-16) with five RBI and six runs scored. He hit safely in each game, added three walks and a stolen base. For the season, Falcone is batting .349 and leads the team with 11 stolen bases.
CSI Softball had a modified week, playing just a single doubleheader, sweeping the College of New Rochelle in a couple of hard-fought, 2-1, and 5-4, wins. In her lone start against New Rochelle this weekend, Meagher went the full seven innings, giving up just an earned run while fanning a pair in CSI’s 2-1 win. For the season, she currently leads the nation in ERA, amassing a 4-1 record with a 0.27 ERA in 26 innings of work.
CSI freshman Deavion Brown has been making a habit of Rookie of the Week honors, bagging her third already this season. She put in another week another set of spectacular finishes in the Coach Omeltchenko Invitational held at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. She won the gold in the 100-meter Dash out of a field of 18, scoring a time of 12.60, her fastest time this season. Then she took the silver in the 200-meter Dash with a time of 26.42 in a field of 16.
Her counterpart on the men’s side Jared Nusser, took his second Rookie of the Week honor with his performance at the Coach Omeltchenko Invitational. Nusser took second-place in the 200-meter Dash, recording a time of 23.10 in the field of 19. He also placed second in a group of 10 in the 400-meter Dash with a time of 50.79, missing first place by just 0.01. Finally, he was a part of CSI’s 4×100 that put up a time of 46.02, coming in 4th.
