The College of Staten Island and St. George’s University (SGU) in Grenada, West Indies have reached an agreement to offer a seamless 4+4 program that will allow students to obtain Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degrees. Students who successfully complete a Bachelor of Science degree in a pre-approved, pre-medicine or pre-veterinary program at CSI will have the opportunity to pursue either an MD or DVM degree at St. George’s University.
CSI Interim President Timothy G. Lynch commented, “I am pleased with the announcement of the 4+4 program between CSI and SGU, which will provide a seamless path for our medical and veterinary students to earn their MD and DVM degrees. The College of Staten Island strives to provide our students with myriad opportunities to achieve their academic and career goals, and this is another wonderful program that will not only contribute to student success, but will also allow participants to experience studying in other countries, expanding their horizons even further.”
“We are delighted to partner with CSI to educate the next generation of doctors and veterinarians,” said Dr. Richard Liebowitz, Vice Chancellor of St. George’s University. “Both of these professions are facing shortages that pose a concerning threat to public health. Initiatives like this one will help us to close those gaps, while expanding the horizon of opportunities for students. We’re honored to work toward those goals alongside CSI.”
After students complete four years of study at CSI, they have the option of completing their first two years of medical study at SGU or their first year at Northumbria University in the UK and their second year at SGU. Qualified medical students will complete the final two years of the program in clinical rotations at SGU’s affiliated hospitals in the United States or the UK. Qualified veterinary students will complete their first three years at SGU and their final clinical year in one of SGU’s affiliated schools in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, or the UK.
Medical students who are accepted into the 4+4 program will receive a $10,000 scholarship from SGU. Subject to seating limitations, students may be eligible for a scholarship to attend the SGU Med/Vet Summer Leadership Academy on the Grenada campus.
