Join us for Toxic Religion and You: An Affirming and Inclusive Workshop to Heal Trauma on Tuesday, May 7 in Building 2N, Room 104 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm.

Please join the Bertha Harris Women’s Center as it hosts an inclusive and supportive discussion about toxic religion and ways to overcome the trauma that it causes. Many persons in religious authority may have told you that God loves you less because of who you are: that is toxic religion. Especially gay, transgender, nonbinary, and female persons have been significantly harmed by such actions. This conversation, co-led by two members of clergy representing the Episcopal Interparish Council in Staten Island with Women’s Center staff, will help those harmed to learn about the ways in which these toxic statements do not align with the values of many Christians and churches who follow the commandment of love for all.

This event is open to all, whatever your faith, identity, or journey. Students, staff, and faculty are all welcome.

The Rev. Hank Tuell is a dedicated priest in the Episcopal Church. Born and raised in a Baptist household, Father Hank’s faith journey was marked by challenges as he navigated his identity as a gay man within the context of his faith. His struggles to find acceptance and spiritual healing led him to the Episcopal Church, where he found a supportive community and a deep sense of belonging.

The Rev. Kirstin Swanson is an Episcopal priest committed to a vision of Christianity that is loving and affirming. Born and raised on Staten Island, and now raising her own children here, Mother Kirstin’s ministry focuses on creating connections and community building. A nearly lifelong Episcopalian, she relishes accompanying people on their journeys of faith.

All are welcome to attend this workshop that focuses on love and acceptance. CLUE (PD) credit is available.
