College of Staten Island Professor Mikael Vejdemo-Johansson has been elected a full member of Sigma Xi, an international, multidisciplinary scientific research honor society that recognizes researchers for noteworthy achievements across science and engineering.
Vejdemo-Johansson, a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at CSI who is also a member of the CUNY Graduate Center faculty, was recognized for his work spanning mathematics, computer science, and data science. His research applies mathematical tools to complex problems in areas including machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and data analysis.
The Sigma Xi recognition also highlights Vejdemo-Johansson’s broader contributions to research and academic community-building. His recent National Science Foundation grants, for example, have supported the participation of U.S.-based Ph.D. students in the Young Topologist Meetings in Europe, helping create opportunities for students to engage with an international research community.
“Building up my own community has always been deeply important to me, and I have put in a lot of work over the years on community building,” Vejdemo-Johansson said in a piece featured by The Graduate Center. “The Sigma Xi invitation cited my recent NSF grants, which funded the participation of U.S.-based Ph.D. students in the Young Topologist Meetings in Europe.”
At CSI, Vejdemo-Johansson’s work is closely connected to the College’s role within CUNY’s doctoral education and research community. Through his affiliation with the CUNY Graduate Center, he works with doctoral students while also engaging CSI’s diverse student body in research and advanced study.
Vejdemo-Johansson has led a research seminar that is approaching its 10th anniversary, providing a forum for students and researchers to explore ideas and collaborate in an area where mathematics, computing, and data intersect. The honor recognizes the connection CSI faculty have to students in advancing research, doctoral education, and broader academic communities.
