Recently, the ASL Club here on campus held its Halloween event in 2S. Students were all very excited to celebrate the holiday weekend early with many coming in their costumes.
The party featured pizza, candy, and drinks for those in attendance to enjoy, and participants learned Halloween signs so they could be even more festive. Participants were very eager, paying close attention, and repeating each sign back and guessing what they could mean.
After going over some festive signs for the holiday, they were able to play some games together as they enjoyed their treats. The first was Pictionary, where students chose a word from a paper that Sophia Artz from the ASL Club provided. She also gave the instructions for students in sign language with ASL being integral to the event while students enjoyed the festivities.
From there, those who were chosen would draw out another word and participants would guess by signing the word. Whoever got the word first would then get a turn at drawing another.
This was very popular with so many students who played the game and tried their best to win, as well as working together in order to figure out harder drawings to sign. The games were all meant to be collaborative and fun for those in attendance as they learned more about sign language.
The event was strongly received by a few students who had just finished some of their midterms and were glad to be able to relax and hang out with their peers.
Participants also spoke eagerly to one another about their costumes, complimenting one another. Some also tried to guess some of their peers’ costumes. It was clear to everyone in attendance that the holiday brought out everyone’s creative sides.
The event ended with everyone being given the reminder to have fun over the weekend but most importantly to remain safe.
