2009 CSI Day of Assessment

The 2009 CSI Day of Assessment promises to be an informative day for everyone in academic departments or support offices campus-wide.  The event, scheduled for Friday, Apr. 24, from 9:00am to 4:00pm, will feature the following presentations:  Dr. William “El” Samuels and Dr. Brian Carolan (Education), “Streamlining Data Collection Within and Across Departments for SPA Reports”; Dr. Paul Arcario and Dr. Cecilia Macheski (LaGuardia Community College), “ePortfolios and Outcomes Assessment at LaGuardia Community College”; Ms. Shannon Cammarano (Manager, The Hub), “One-Stop Student Services at CSI – The Hub:  Inception and Evolution”; Caryl Watkins (Director, Career and Scholarship Center) and Richard Krystorforski, “The Career and Scholarship Center:  Our Mission, Services, and Evaluation”; and Provost Dr. William Fritz, “Benchmarking, Strategic Planning, and Institutional Vision.”  Alan Hoffner, Director of Testing and CSI’s resident humorist, is planning a lunchtime activity featuring his special brand of levity.  Our colleagues at other CUNY campuses have already expressed substantial interest in attending the Day of Assessment.  If you would like to participate in this event, please RSVP as soon as possible to Robin Cavagnaro at 718.982. 2360, or via email at cavagnaro@mail.csi.cuny.edu.  We want to make certain that there is space for members of the CSI campus community.  For more details, please click here.

2009 Doctorate in Physical Therapy Research Poster Day

The Faculty of the Department of Physical Therapy is pleased to announce the 2009 Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) Research Poster Day, which will take place on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Atrium from noon to 4:00pm.

Our graduates will present their posters and discuss their research projects with the CSI community. Join us in congratulating our first graduating class of DPT professionals receiving their degrees from the CUNY Graduate Center.

New Student Conference/Spring Undergraduate Open House

As a reminder, the Office of Recruitment and Admissions will be holding a New Student Conference/Spring Undergraduate Open House for prospective and admitted students on Sunday, May 3 in the Center for the Arts ( Building 1P) from 10:30am to 2:00pm.

As always, we invite all members of the College community to participate in this important recruitment event.  Together, we can showcase the many opportunities available to students at CSI with the following goals:

-To encourage the newly admitted students to accept our offer of admission and enroll at the College.
-To recruit prospective students (mostly students who are currently juniors in high school).

The Academic and Student Services Fair is tentatively scheduled from noon to 2:00pm.  Tables will be available beginning at 10:30am for any representatives who wish to speak to students and guests as they arrive between 10:30am and 11:00am.

A Conversation with the CSI President and Vice Presidents

CSI President Tomás Morales and members of his Cabinet would like to meet with students and hear their thoughts on CSI.  This event will take place on Monday, Apr. 20 at 1:00pm in the Campus Center (Building 1C) Green Dolphin Lounge at 1:00pm.

The President’s Cabinet is the senior administrative body of the College of Staten Island. The Cabinet meets weekly to discuss campus issues and initiatives, policies and procedures, and items of importance to the well-being and advancement of the College.

Lectures on War Violence against Women and Civilians

The Bertha Harris Women’s Center and the CSI Women’s Studies Program present “Violence against Women and Civilians in Armed Conflict,” on Thursday, Apr. 30 in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P), Room 120 at 6:30pm. 

Dr. Cary Karacas, Assistant Professor of Geography, CSI Department of Political Science, Economics, and Philosophy, will discuss “Cities, Civilians, and the Experience of Firebombing during WW II.” The lecture will focus on the firebombing of Japan during WW II, the first major war to target civilians on a massive scale.

Also, Dr. Adeyinka M.A. Akinsulure-Smith, Assistant Professor of Psychology, City College of NY Department of Psychology, and a licensed psychologist who works with survivors of armed conflict, refugees, asylees, and asylum-seekers, nationally and internationally, will discuss “Violence against Women during Armed Conflict.” The focus of this lecture will be the impact of contemporary armed conflict on the lives of women and girls around the world, especially of rape as a weapon of war. 

A question and answer session will follow the discussions.

"Liberty Kid" Comes to CSI!

The award-winning, critically acclaimed film Liberty Kid, winner for Best Feature at the New York International Latino Film Festival will be screened at CSI on Friday, Apr. 10 at 7:00pm in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Recital Hall.

The director, Ilya Chaiken, a Brooklyn-based independent filmmaker will be at the screening and will conduct a Q&A session after the film. More info is available here.

This event is sponsored by the CSI FIlm Club, admission is free, and the event is CLUE-certified.

Alumni Stimulus Package

The Alumni Relations Office, in collaboration with the Career and Scholarship Center, presents An Alumni Stimulus Package,” a special program intended for our alumni who have been affected by job loss or who face threatened job security in the current economy.  The event will take place on Tuesday, Apr. 14 in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Recital Hall from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Eric Barron, a nationally recognized motivational speaker for management and career coaching, will be our featured presenter.  Mr. Barron will address a wide range of skills and techniques needed to find/keep a job in tough economic times (or any time). Topics will include refreshing one’s resume, updating interview and communication skills, Internet job searches, and more.

This event is intended for our alumni; friends and family are also welcome, if accompanied by alumni. Pre-registration is required by calling Joanne German at 718.982.2290.
