Please be advised that an email being sent from verifywebmail @ mail .com is being circulated on campus. The email warns users that there is a lot of spam getting through the email server and that all email accounts need to be reset. You are then instructed to click on the link in the email and provide email user name, email user password, and date of birth. DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK. This email is a spam attack known as phishing. I am in the process of having it blocked by the College’s spam detection devices (Proofpoint). Emails of this sort get through because they appear to be legitimate and come from a source that has not been flagged as spam. Always keep in mind that the Office of Technology Systems will NEVER send out an email asking you for account names, passwords, and personal information such as date of birth. Also, when you receive your digest from the Proofpoint devices, it will have an audit section that shows all mail arriving in your inbox. There will be a link to mark any of the emails as spam. By doing so, you are helping us train the Proofpoint servers to catch these emerging phishing schemes.
As always, thank you for being vigilant in helping us combat these attacks. If you have any questions, please call 718.982.4080.
