Summer is almost here and so is the inevitable boredom that summer break brings for area kids, once the initial joy of abandoning the day-in, day-out routine of school wears off. The College of Staten Island has a cure for those summertime blues.
For the first time ever, the College is offering a variety of dynamic programs for children aged 8 to 12, as well as for high school students.
Susan Holak, Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness at CSI says, “The College of Staten Island is pleased to provide opportunities for exploration and learning to all age groups. Conveniently located and reasonably priced, our summer programs for children and teens offer enrichment, excitement, and fun. What better way to improve upon existing skills, or learn new ones, than at the College of Staten Island, this summer!”
College for Kids
College for Kids, designed for kids 8 to 12, is a four-week Mad Science Camp. Each week, depending on the session that they choose (June 29 through July 24 or July 27 through August 21) the camp offers a world of scientific fun. The first week introduces students to the mysterious world of a Secret Agent Lab or Lasers, Magnets, Magic, and Other Cool Stuff. Week Two focuses on Rockin’ Rockets and Unique Flying Objects or Radical Reactions. In the third week, participants can learn about Red Hot Robots or Crazy Chemworks. The camp concludes with a week of Action Science or Nature’s Wonders.
All classes in the Mad Science Camp are hands-on and inquiry-based; are led by trained, qualified, and engaging instructors; and they meet national and state curriculum standards. The tuition even includes lunch and snacks. Classes run from Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
Summer College for High Schoolers
CSI also gives high school students a chance to beat the heat and get more out of their vacation time with Summer College for High Schoolers. Students can develop their artistic prowess through a course on sculpture (Mondays through Thursdays, July 6 through July 16 from 9:00am to noon) and/or a painting class (Mondays through Thursdays, July 6 through July 16 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm). Both classes are taught by internationally renowned artist Professor Howard Smith, whose works have been on display at exhibits in New York, Munich, Zurich, and Italy.
Speaking of Italy, high schoolers who are interested in learning Italian can enroll in the College’s Intensive Italian Language Program (Mondays through Thursdays, July 6 through July 30 from 9:00am to 12:30pm) . Taught by Professor Blerina Likollari, Adjunct Instructor at CSI, this course will provide the background necessary for the students to understand basic Italian language conversation and contemporary practical customs, as well as prepare them for higher-level studies of the language.
SAT Test Preparation for Teens
Summer is a great time for high school students to get a jump on the competition and prepare for their SAT exams. CSI offers the highly successful BEST PREP/SAT Test Preparation in 14 sessions (from June 27 to mid-July). The director of BEST-PREP, John Morris, Dean of Students at Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, brings more than 13 years of professional experience to the service of his students, equipping them with the most effective tools and strategies needed to perform their best on the SAT.
