It is with sadness I report the death of Dr. Felix Cardegna, our friend and colleague who retired to Maryland in 1995. Dr. Cardegna was a distinguished scholar and academician, who served as acting President of the College of Staten Island in 1994 leading the College during a very difficult and trying time in its history. His accomplished career at CSI and SICC spanned over 20 years from his professorial appointment in 1972 to the Psychology/Sociology/Philosophy Department. In 1976 he served as the Dean of Special Programs; in 1977 was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost; and served as Executive Vice President and Provost from 1987 until his appointment as acting President.
Dr. Cardegna died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease on October 23, 2009, at House of Jubilee in Fallston MD. He will long be remembered with love and joy by his wife of 37 years, Kirsten Anderson Cardegna, his son, David Rust Cardegna of San Francisco, his daughter Kathryn Hunter Cardegna, PhD of Brooklyn, his son-in-law, John F. Crary, MD, PhD and his grandsons Felix Anderson Crary and August Hunter Crary, a brother, and many Cardegna, D’Alesandro, and Granese cousins.
He will also be remembered for his deep and abiding devotion to higher education, to The City University of New York, and in particular to the College of Staten Island. The CSI community extends its sincerest condolences to the Cardegna family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday Oct. 31, 2009 at 100 Harborview Drive at 6:00pm and the family will receive visitors there from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Burial will be in private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to House of Jubilee, 2278 Baldwin Mills Road, Fallston, MD 21047, where he was cared for lovingly by Tony and Cherie Rupp during the final year of his life.
